Care Bears NFT collection has dropped: another children’s favorite on Web3
Like blockchain-based zombies, nostalgic cartoon characters continue to return as NFTs. Now, it’s the Care Bear collection from the 1980s. The multi-colored plush teddy bear characters starred in a TV series that aired from 1985 to 1988.
Care Bears are currently positioned as a “Notable Collection” on OpenSea and ranked 17th in volume in the last 24 hours. The floor price is 0.06 ETH ($103) with 202 ETH in total trading volume. The initial cost per unrevealed collectible was $50. The NFTs are minted on the proof-of-stake layer-2 blockchain Polygon.
“The Care Bears Forever ETH” drop advertises that its mission is to “spread love and positivity and turn this so-called Bear Market into a Care Bears Market.”
To collect a bear, users purchased a “Care Chest,” which was opened during the mint day on August 4, revealing a randomly generated Care Bear. Collectors of multiple characters who complete challenges get rewarded with prizes.
The collection has a digital marketplace where they accept payments in fiat. The marketplace’s playful interface is somewhat similar to Nickelodeon’s, as it is built by the same developer, Recur.
Cartoon and comic characters are all over Web3. The NFT marketplace VeVe has released NFTs related to Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, and DC Comics. Even Warner Bros. has dropped the Tweety Bird PFP avatar collection on Nifty.
Are the 80s and 90s cartoon character NFTs a good investment? Only time will show because even if Nickelodeon NFTs ranked 1st on OpenSea for some time, the floor price has dropped from 0.42 ETH to 0.04 ETH. The value of NFTs, such as Care Bears, Rugrats, and Hey Arnold, can still be high, as the names are well-known worldwide. Yet there’s no surprise that more old and forgotten cartoon characters will be resurrected as NFTs and start a new life in the Metaverse.
