Sony has made an investment to incorporate AI chips into Raspberry Pi boards

Sony has announced that it is making a “strategic investment” in Raspberry Pi as part of its AI tech for image sensing functions. The aim is to give Raspberry Pi users around the world a development platform for Aitrios edge computing.
As part of its strategic investment in Raspberry Pi, Sony’s semiconductor division has announced that it is acquiring a stake in the Raspberry Pi Foundation. The aim is to give Raspberry Pi users across the world a development platform for its Aitrios edge computing (onchip) AI platform used for image sensing functions such as facial recognition.
“We are delighted to be working with Raspberry Pi Ltd. to support the development of unique and sophisticated applications using our edge AI devices on the Aitrios platform,” said Sony Semiconductor Solutions president and CEO Terushi Shimizu.
Due to its PClike power in a small form factor, the Raspberry Pi 4 and other devices from the company are popular as a way to prototype IoT and other devices. Originally designed as an educational platform to teach robotics, coding and more, it has become popular as a way to prototype IoT and other devices.
The Sony Aitrios could be even more beneficial in the cloud based on cloud AI, which is run directly on chips (edge computing). Sony has developed the system for security, surveillance, and other uses in addition to reducing latency, according to the website. Sony prefers to use the system for inventory accounting, customer counting, license plate recognition, and other purposes. It analyzes data strictly on-chip and only sends metadata to the cloud, it says.
Raspberry Pi has a “longstanding and valued strategic partner” in Sony, the company said. It recently provided imaging chips with autofocus capability and helped Sony PI get its UK manufacturing plant up to speed in the early days of the company.
