Apple will likely release its VR/AR Headset in 2023
Meta will soon have a direct competitor for its Oculus Quest Headset. Though the Cupertino-based tech company doesn’t seem to be developing a Metaverse, Apple is expected to launch the AR/VR Headset next year
The Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) begins today. The five-day event (June 6-10) will introduce a handful of new products, including iOS 16, iPadOS 16, tvOS 16, macOS 13, and watchOS 9. Bloomberg notes that even though Apple is unlikely to introduce its VR/AR headset at WWDC, it will still be the most talked about. According to the Financial Times, Apple’s headset “is shaping up to be its most significant new product since the iPhone,” which first appeared on the market 15 years ago.
Some sources report that Apple has begun working with Hollywood filmmakers such as Jon Favreau (The Mandalorian) to create video content that fuses physical and virtual worlds.
The mixed-reality headset “is likely to use cameras to pass a view of the outside world into a high-resolution display that can overlay digital objects on physical surroundings and could arrive in March of next year,” Anshel Sag, principal analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, told Reuters.
In December 2021, Realityo Systems LLC filed a trademark for RealityOS — likely the name of the operating system the tech giant is developing for the VR/AR Headset.
According to Apple Insider, Apple CEO Tim Cook believes that augmented reality has more potential than virtual reality. The company has been secretive about its debut headset — and hasn’t publicly confirmed it yet — but more information should appear after WWDC.
Microsoft and Google are also reportedly in the process of developing 3D digital products that would blend the physical with the virtual. The VR/AR — or XR, for extended reality — race is on.
