Xiaomi Introduces Prototype Augmented Reality Glasses, “Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition”
In Brief
Chinese tech company Xiaomi reveals prototype of wireless AR glasses “Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition” at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Chinese tech company Xiaomi has unveiled a pair of prototype AR glasses, the Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition. The lightweight augmented reality glasses feature “low-latency wireless connectivity,” “retina-level near-eye display,” and a magnesium-lithium alloy structure designed with carbon fiber materials.
Xiaomi announced the new gadget and its ambition to enter the immersive technology space at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, which started today and will end on March 2. However, the glasses are only a concept as they are not currently for sale.
The glasses also feature Xiaomi AR Gesture Control that connects virtual and real space and allows gesture control for completing tasks and interacting with real-life objects.
“Its electrochromic lenses allow for seamless access to reality and the virtual world at a single click,” Lei Jun, Xiaomi’s CEO, wrote when introducing the device.
Xiaomi’s wireless AR glasses can function without a smartphone, but the headset will work with the Xiaomi 13 and 13 Pro, launched on Sunday. The company also said that the Mi Share app’s streaming feature would enable users to watch YouTube and TikTok videos through the glasses.
According to Engadget, Xiaomi’s AR glasses use the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 1, which is the same chipset used for Quest 2. The device weighs 126 grams and has microLED displays with a maximum brightness of 1,200 nits and a silicon-oxygen anode battery.
Apple reportedly plans to unveil its mixed reality headset “Reality Pro” this spring, while the device shipments should take place this fall. The company was rumored to have suspended its plans to launch AR glasses any time soon. However, other sources reported that Apple partnered with Chinese tech company Luxshare to develop AR devices.
