Apple has bought Mira, an augmented reality headset startup, for an undisclosed amount. Several VC firms, including Blue Bear Capital, Happiness Ventures, and Sequoia, invested $17 million in the company prior to the buyout. The venture capital firms put a lot of faith in Mira’s head-up displays and software that enables developers to produce AR applications, games, and experiences.
Ben Taft founded Mira in 2016. Initially, the startup developed AR headsets for visitors of Universal Studios’ Nintendo World theme parks.
In 2020, Mira was focused on building hardware for augmented reality. Later, it pivoted toward industrial deployments. As shared by The Verge, the company even had military contracts, including ones with the U.S. Air Force and Navy.
The news follows the roll-out of Apple’s AR headset, Vision Pro. On June 5, the tech giant presented the AR headset priced at $3,500. It is the first-ever spatial computing device that will revolutionize the industry by enabling the creation of immersive digital experiences. Vision Pro will be available for purchase in the United States in early 2024, with availability in other countries expected later.
The brand has not clarified how it will integrate Mira’s developments into its existing strategy and devices at the moment of writing.
