WhatsApp Introduces Message Editing Features and Tests Text-Based AI Tools

Users of Meta’s messaging application WhatsApp will soon be able to edit messages.
WhatsApp has unveiled a new function that allows users to edit messages for 15 minutes. The feature will be available in all countries.
According to a blog post, to edit a message, users just need to long press on the sent message and select “edit” from the drop-down menu. Notably, all edited messages will display “edited” alongside them so parties of a conversation are aware that an edit has been made. The company has confirmed that the feature has already started to roll out and will be made available to everyone in the coming weeks.
WhatsApp already made it possible to delete messages. However, it doesn’t go away, and the “this message was deleted” notification is much more annoying, making the editing experience more sophisticated.
Earlier this week, the company also announced the upcoming implementation of a new “Chat Lock” function. The function enables users to keep conversations private. According to WhatsApp, locked chats will be stored in a password or biometric-protected folder, and users should not expect to receive notifications (or actual message content) from those conversations.
In February, Meta announced it would be integrating generative AI into its services. The tech conglomerate’s initial focus was centered around testing text-based AI tools for WhatsApp and Messenger, both Meta-owned platforms. On a side note, artificial intelligence will most likely be a key theme in the company’s future as it seeks to integrate it into all of its applications. During a recent earnings call, the company’s executives used the phrase “AI” 57 times.
At the same time, Meta’s metaverse initiatives have seen a slight “pause” in building.
