Chinese AI Company iFlytek Launches a ChatGPT Rival
In Brief
Chinese tech company iFlytek announced the launch of its AI-powered chatbot, “Spark Model.”
The organization aims to surpass ChatGPT in Chinese language and reach the same level in English.
Chinese tech organization iFlytek aims to surpass OpenAI’s viral chatbot ChatGPT.
The artificial intelligence-focused company plans to do so with the help of its newly-launched AI system “Spark Model,” which went live on Saturday, May 6. The launch event, dubbed “Spark Desk,” took place in Hefei. During the event, the founder and president of iFlytek, Liu Qingfeng, compared the new general artificial intelligence system to ChatGPT. Moreover, he shared the company’s plans to surpass the well-known AI bot developed by OpenAI.
iFlytek demonstrated seven capabilities of the “Spark Model.” In the Chinese language, the bot has surpassed ChatGPT in three dimensions: text generation, knowledge question and answer, and mathematical ability.
“This year, we will continue to upgrade the large model, and on October 24, we will surpass ChatGPT in Chinese and reach the same level as it in English,”
said Qingfeng in a statement translated from Chinese into English by Google Translator.
During the press conference, Qingfeng also recalled to his original intention to predict the future. According to the official announcement, the public present at the event was happy with the idea. “This is the eagerly awaited and enthusiastic recognition of the whole industry,” states the press release.
“Spark Model” visually resembles ChatGPT, with the dialogue history stored on the left side of the screen and the chat on the right. The program has a white and dark blue-colored interface.
iFlytek is subsidized by the state. It’s worth noting that ChatGPT has been banned in China, meaning that the model can not be trained in Chinese languages. This gives iFlytek the room to develop a general artificial intelligence model strong enough to compete with OpenAI’s technology.
On a side note, iFlytek is not the first tech organization to launch a ChatGPT rival. In April this year, Alibaba Cloud launched its new AI chatbot called Tongyi Qianwen. The same month, China Telecom’s cloud unit, CTYun, announced the development of its own ChatGPT-like artificial intelligence model.
