VMAs’ Metaverse Performance of the Year award goes to K-pop girl band BLACKPINK
The VMAs include a new category for the first time in MTV history: Metaverse Performance of the Year. Out of six nominees, the award winner was the South Korean girl K-pop band BLACKPINK, with a virtual concert in the metaverse called ‘The Virtual PUBG Mobile.’
On August 28, at the Prudential Center in New Jersey, fans and artists gathered for the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards. Many well-known music groups and artists performed live, including Annita, J Balvin, Maneskin, Lizzo, Nicki Minaj, Jack Harlow, Bad Bunny, and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
BLACKPINK was nominated along with another South Korean K-pop band, BTS, who presented the first-ever Minecraft concert, performing ‘Butter’ and ‘Permission to Dance’ via YouTube. BTS won the award for ‘Group of the Year,’ for which BLACKPINK was also nominated.
Other nominees in the metaverse category were CharliXCX and Twenty-One Pilots. Both performed metaverse concerts on Roblox. Justin Bieber was also nominated for ‘Interactive Virtual Experience,’ which he performed on the XR platform Wave. It was the singer’s first show as an avatar in the virtual world.
The last nominee was the Rift Tour, a three-day music experience starring Ariana Grande in the popular battle-royale game Fornite.
BLACKPINK announced their collaboration with the multiplayer game PUBG Mobile to present ‘The Virtual’ in July. It was the band’s second collaboration with PUBG. In their first partnership, songs from the band’s first full-length album, ‘The Album,” were used as the game’s background music.
Meanwhile, Eminem and Snoop Dogg performed their new NFT-influenced song ‘From the D 2 the LBC.’ The track was nominated for the ‘Best Hip-Hop’ category and included both rappers in an animated video clip representing their own Bored Ape NFTs.
