Apple’s AI Plans Are Uncertain as Pioneers Debate the Risks of the Technology
In Brief
Apple is widely speculated to be working on an Artificial Intelligence project. CEO Tim Cook hasn’t said anything about it yet. Two leading AI academics have called for a pause in advanced AI development.
Apple has been heavily involved in artificial intelligence research but has kept a low profile so far. CEO Tim Cook said AI is “interesting,” but there are a number of issues with tech. Two leading AI academics have said that Apple should pause the development of advanced AI. A brief history of chatbots.
Generative AI technology like ChatGPT is responsible for big changes in technology. For over 50 years, people have been working to make computers capable of passing the Turing test: this required computers to generate interactions that would be indistinguishable from human interactions. ELIZA was one of the earliest chatbots which managed to trick some people into believing it was a real person.
ChatGPT and Bard use text analysis to provide humanlike reactions to questions. They use statistics to predict which word is most likely to follow next. They have become increasingly sophisticated to the point where the output can be convincing. Apple is cautious about using Siri’s new technology to make the voice assistant smarter. The company rarely tries to be the first to market with new technology, as it prefers to watch what others are doing to figure out in order to learn from their mistakes and do it better.
Bing is most well-known for their chatbots, but they also have advanced AI. The company is keen to point out that Apple uses AI for Siri.
Apple listed some of its achievements in AI, such as creating features like Fall Detection, Crash Detection, and the Apple Watch’s ECG. The company cited these features as saving people’s lives. However, they also cited “issues” with the technology. Even the most famous AI pioneers can’t agree on the seriousness of issues like climate change.
Geoffrey Hinton was so concerned with the dangers of AI solutions that are currently being developed that he left his role at Google to be able to discuss the risks freely. He believes stopping the development of AI is “utterly unrealistic” now. He told Routers in an interview, “I’m in the camp that thinks this is an existential risk, and it’s close enough that we ought to be working very hard right now, and putting a lot of resources into figuring out what we can do about it.”
On the other hand, Jürgen Schmidhuber, called “the father of AI” for his work in natural language processing and neural networks, believes that the dangers AI poses have been exaggerated by its opponents. AI will advance to the point where it surpasses human intelligence and has no interest in humans. As humans benefit from and use the tools developed by AI, AI systems will become more dependent on us.
