New ChatGPT Bot Fights Phone Scammers in a Unique Way

In Brief

Roger Anderson, founder of Jolly Roger, uses ChatGPT to combat phone scams by using a bot to engage with scammers, prolonging interactions and providing a protective barrier.

The service is available through a subscription model and offers diverse voice and character choices, enhancing engagement and entertainment value.

Phone scams have become an increasing nuisance, preying on unsuspecting individuals and causing frustration for many. However, a new solution has emerged to tackle this problem head-on. Roger Anderson, the founder of the Jolly Roger telephone company, has harnessed the power of ChatGPT to combat phone scammers in a unique and effective way.

New ChatGPT Bot Fights Phone Scammers in a Unique Way

Anderson’s innovative approach involves using a bot powered by ChatGPT to engage with scammers, keeping them on the line for as long as possible and wasting their time and resources. This not only frustrates the scammers but also helps protect potential victims from falling into their traps.

The service, available through a subscription model, costs $25 per year. When users receive calls from spammers, the bot seamlessly joins the conversation, allowing users to listen in and enjoy the interaction if they wish. What sets this service apart is the range of voices and characters that users can choose from. Each character adds a distinct flavor to the conversation, making it all the more entertaining.

For instance, there’s Whitey, an elderly miser who constantly grumbles and complains, adding a touch of humor to the encounter. Salty Sally, on the other hand, embodies the role of a busy housewife with mischievous children, frequently asking the caller to repeat themselves amidst the chaos. These unique characters add an extra layer of engagement to the conversation, ensuring scammers are kept occupied.

While the voices generated by ChatGPT sound convincingly human, it’s worth noting that the responses may sometimes sound repetitive or unnatural. The bot might occasionally divert from the conversation’s intended path or interrupt the caller. However, these minor flaws don’t hinder its effectiveness in keeping scammers engaged for extended periods, often up to 15 minutes.

The Jolly Roger telephone company is not the first to employ such tactics to outsmart scammers. In 2021, Russian bank Tinkoff introduced Defender Oleg, who warned users about potential spam and engaged scammers in playful banter. Similarly, virtual secretaries in other ecosystems adopt comparable strategies, albeit without the utilization of ChatGPT.

The Jolly Roger telephone company has found an innovative way to counter phone scammers, providing users with a practical and entertaining means of dealing with unwanted calls. While there may be room for improvement in terms of response quality, this solution is undoubtedly a step in the right direction. As the fight against phone scams continues, it’s refreshing to witness creative initiatives that utilize AI technology to empower individuals and frustrate scammers in the process.
