TIME magazine builds ‘Time Square’ in The Sandbox
New York-based TIME magazine has been active in the NFT market and is now entering the Metaverse through a partnership with The Sandbox. The collaboration comes through TIME’s NFT community initiative, TIMEPieces. The president of TIME, Keith Grossman, announced the news during the NYC NFT event and called for architects to design Times Square in the virtual world.
TIME acquired land in The Sandbox to build a virtual art and commerce hub, TIME Square. The inspiration comes from the iconic neighborhood in New York City.
TIMEPieces was created in September 2021 to envision the brand in the Web3 space, develop a community, and share over a century-old magazine’s legacy. The entrance into the Metaverse will open doors to immersive experiences and provide TIMEPieces holders with access to discussions, TIME Studios screenings, events, and educational materials. Community members of the initiative will have the opportunity to contribute to TIME Square’s creation.
“The Sandbox is often viewed as a ‘virtual Manhattan,’ a vibrant space alive with culture, entertainment, and brands, where anyone can discover, learn, work, meet new people, play, dance, and find amazing new opportunities. By partnering with TIME, we’re adding TIMEPieces as the beating heart and soul of this virtual Manhattan, where a design call for virtual architects will be held in TIME Square, a place in our creative metaverse for brands and creators,” said Sebastien Borget, co-founder of The Sandbox.
TIMEPieces currently has several NFT collections on OpenSea: Genesis, Robotos, and Long Neckie Women of the Year. The magazine also hosts its community’s artwork and sells minting passes for future drops. In March, TIME auctioned the first-ever magazine issue as an NFT, featuring the founder of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin. The magazine also accepts cryptocurrency for subscriptions.
