The UK Aims to Become an Artificial Intelligence Hub, Invests $100M

In Brief

United Kingdom’s Prime Minister wants to make the UK an artificial intelligence hub.

The UK government will invest over $100 million in Turing World Leader fellowships and the AI industry.

Several AI model developers, including OpenAI, DeepMind, and Anthropic, will give the government access to their products.

United Kingdom’s Prime Minister reportedly wants to make the UK an artificial intelligence hub. On June 12, The i Paper published a video featuring Rishi Sunak announcing his plans for AI regulation. In the video, the Prime Minister says he wants the UK to become the leader in regulation of the technology.

According to the video, Sunak plans to introduce two new Turing World Leader fellowships focusing on AI. The scholarships are reportedly a part of the Prime Minister’s larger strategy to guarantee that the UK takes the lead in AI innovation and research. One fellowship will focus on the food security problem. In this case, artificial intelligence could help resolve issues with crop supplies.

The second fellowship will be dedicated to Healthcare Research. As part of this program, scientists will train to ensure that there are qualified sources that can work with artificial intelligence machines. The fellowship will focus on training workers to operate AI in order to provide healthcare services. Overall, the UK government will invest over $100 million in scholarships and the AI industry.

Rishi Sunak understands citizen’s fear of artificial intelligence. In the announcement, the Prime Minister says that the government will do cutting-edge safety research.

To do so, the government has partnered with several AI model developers, which gave priority access to their products. According to a tweet shared by Rishi Sunak, the UK will work with DeepMind, which created Bard and PaLM-2; OpenAI, the developer of the viral chatbot ChatGPT and GPT-4; and Anthropic, which released Claude AI and Constitutional AI.

However, such partnerships mean that the UK government will have the possibility to “teach” the AI models which responses to give to users’ questions and prompts. This means that the largely used artificial intelligence applications might give biased answers based on the information that the government trained them on.
