University of Tokyo introduces a Metaverse course
The University of Tokyo, Todai, will provide courses about the Metaverse in the upcoming academic year, according to local news outlet The Asahi Shimbun. The initiative aims to develop knowledge of the current digital transformation.
The studies will primarily focus on advanced technologies and will be available for both high schoolers and adults wanting to expand their knowledge. As part of the Metaverse classes, high school students will have an opportunity to discover IRL and online engineering programs offered by the University of Tokyo.
Participants that already work will be able to choose additional classes that cover topics like artificial intelligence, new communication technologies, and entrepreneurship. Classes will take place in a virtual space and will be conducted by Todai’s Engineering faculty.
“Thanks to the Metaverse, there could be a way for anyone, no matter their age, gender, socioeconomic status, or where they live, to learn about engineering and information science,” said the University’s officials.
Todai also highlighted that the programs will be available for both male and female students, noting that the latter “remain underrepresented in university engineering degrees.” Todai University students will have the option to research engineering careers within the Metaverse. Moreover, course listeners will receive completion certificates.
Earlier this month, The Sandbox announced the launch of a Metaverse-themed study program aimed at Japanese listeners. CEO of The Sandbox, Sebastien Borget, partners with Digital Hollywood Studio to offer this free course, which starts in September.
