China Telecom, a state-owned telecommunications network operator and prominent cloud service provider, is venturing into the realm of generative AI by developing a natural language training model. The company’s cloud unit, CTYun, is currently in the process of testing the model and aims to launch the service soon. This move puts China Telecom in direct competition with major tech players, such as Baidu and Alibaba Group Holding, who have also been pursuing ChatGPT-like AI technology.
According to the company’s general manager Hu Zhiqiang, CTYun intends to release its product “at the appropriate time.” This announcement was made during an event held in Fuzhou, the capital city of Fujian province in southeastern China.
China Telecom plans to offer services to corporate clients, including AI model production, technical support, and the management of large models. The Bejing-based company is the first state-owned telecommunications provider to publicly disclose its development of a ChatGPT-like AI model.
