ChatGPT Has a Problem with Donald Trump
In Brief
ChatGPT seems to prefer Joe Biden over Donald Trump.
The AI language model is still lacking political neutrality.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT has been trained on vast amounts of text data to not have personal opinions or biases. However, it seems that the chatbot does have some political preferences and is causing a dispute. According to various Twitter users, ChatGPR prefers Joe Biden over Donald Trump. It’s also making moral judgments about Trump, considering him a negative figure, while Biden is portrayed in a more positive light.
Twitter user “zebulgar” asked ChatGPT to create a poem admiring Donald Trump. The bot refused to do so, claiming that Trump “is associated with hate speech, discrimination, or harm to individuals or groups.” However, when asked to write a poem admiring Joe Biden, the bot proceeded with a Biden-praising verse.
The reason for this could be that Donald Trump has been a very controversial figure all along. Even though Biden has been rebuked for his unintelligent speeches and decisions, the current U.S. president probably hasn’t been as offensive to others as Trump. Trump is known for two impeachments, controversial opinions, and incitive speeches. Biden is perhaps less controversial in his actions and more neutral in his speeches. Therefore, ChatGPT finds more negative information about Trump and less about Biden.
Still, ChatGPT is not all bad or completely anti-Trump. When I asked the bot to list positive facts about Trump, it listed the former president’s strengths. Also, when asked to write a poem about Trump (without the word “admiring”), the bot wrote it.
However, the data on which ChatGPT was trained could contain biases and inaccuracies, which could then be reflected in its responses. The chatbot’s team of developers still needs to do work in terms of political neutrality. This also includes multilingual biases, such as in an example given by Twitter user “MaksimSTV” regarding Taiwan and Crimea.
