Somnium’s VR1 headset sets new standards in quality and user experience with its advanced ergonomics, open-source eye tracking, and tactile buttons designed for the ultimate user-friendly touch-and-press experience.
Somnium Space stands out in the VR landscape with its profound integration of blockchain technology, fostering a multichain, interoperable metaverse.
Somnium, a VR platform powered by blockchain, has announced the final stages of development for its VR1 headset. Focused on quality, design, and user experience, the Somnium VR1 promises to set a new benchmark in VR technology.
Amid the growing popularity of VR, Somnium aims to refine every aspect of the device, from the face mask’s comfort to the IPD adjustment mechanism’s precision.
One of the key highlights of the VR1 is its advanced ergonomics, tested with over 50 individuals to ensure optimal comfort for a wide range of facial structures. The headset also boasts four tactile, programmable buttons designed for a satisfying touch-and-press experience, aligning with the company’s user-friendly design philosophy.
Somnium VR1’s Impressive Eye-Tracking and Other Features
Somnium’s dedication to perfection extends to the active cooling system, ensuring efficient cooling and minimal noise even when fully loaded with features like VR, eye tracking, hand tracking, and mixed reality capabilities.
Optics and lenses are another area of focus, with precise laser measurements to guarantee exceptional visual quality. Somnium’s decision to open-source its eye-tracking algorithms empowers developers to refine and adapt the technology, fostering a dynamic environment for continuous improvement.
Somnium’s decision to fully open-source its eye-tracking algorithms empowers developers to have complete control over image processing and fosters ongoing improvements. The eye-tracking system offers impressive capabilities, including a 120Hz refresh rate, distinguishing between open and closed-eye gaze, heat map visualization, foveated rendering, and full access to raw data. The eye-tracking features seamlessly integrate into Somnium Space V3.0. Besides, Somnium plans to organize competitions with substantial rewards to encourage the community to enhance the algorithm’s performance.
The VR1 also introduces cutting-edge mixed-reality modules, including color masking, 3D cockpit modeling, and customizable visual settings, creating an immersive and realistic user experience.
Moreover, Somnium’s collaboration with Prusa3D ensures seamless 3D printing integration, making advanced technology accessible to all. Furthermore, their commitment to after-sales support includes a dedicated team of experts to address technical issues.
Notably, the VR1 has been named a finalist for the VRAwards 2023 in the “VR Hardware of the Year” category, reflecting its impact on the VR community.
“The Somnium VR1 emerges not just as another piece of hardware, but as the ultimate headset tailored for every VR enthusiast, developer, and corporate entity. Our design philosophy is rooted in empowerment and transparency. When you invest in the VR1, you’re not just purchasing a device; you’re acquiring full ownership, free from hidden licenses or barriers,”

Somnium Space Involvement in Blockchain
One distinctive aspect that sets Somnium Space apart from other VR companies is its profound interest in and active implementation of blockchain technology. Somnium Space is a leader in blockchain integration for the virtual world, striving for a multichain, interoperable metaverse.
In 2021, the company integrated Solana NFTs into Somnium Space, enabling efficient cross-chain use. Users could showcase Solana NFTs on Ethereum land parcels and vice versa, fostering dynamic asset mixing.
Solana users can fully utilize their NFTs in Somnium VR, PC, and WebXR clients. Also, NEAR blockchain integration in 2022 further expanded asset interoperability at Somnium. According to the company, Somnium Space’s blockchain ecosystem prioritizes cross-chain functionality and utility.
In September 2022, Somnium Space partnered with Vrgineers and Prusa Research to develop an open-source, 3D printable VR headset called the Somnium VR ONE. This collaborative effort aimed to make high-end VR accessible to a wider audience.
The VR ONE headset is wireless, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 processor, and offers a resolution of 2880×2880 with a wide field of view. It also supports HMD Native SteamVR and allows user customization and assembly, following an open-source model.
