Snap to test NFTs as AR filters for Snapchat
Snap continues testing AR for Snapchat, yet this time the social media company is adding NFTs to allow creators to showcase their digital collectibles as AR filters. The company should begin testing the feature at the end of August, Financial Times reported.
Snapchat already offers users AR filters that are imposed on real-life pictures and add an imagery layer in the background or foreground.
To experience the NFT feature on the platform, creators need to mint NFTs on an NFT platform and transfer them to Snapchat as Lenses. Blockchain technology attributes the NFT filter to its creator by certifying ownership. As FT explained, showing off NFTs on Snapchat will be free, and the platform will focus on finding ways to allow creators to monetize their designs.
In a blog post, Snap wrote how AR is becoming a powerful tool for marketing as the technology enhances the user experience.
“Augmented reality is important to the growth of our business,” CEO of Snap Evan Spiegel once told CNBC.
Fashion brands, such as Burberry, use Snap’s AR fashion try-on tools and other features that allow users to view wearables in their home space and explore them thoroughly.
Last month, Snap’s competitor, Meta, began testing NFTs on Instagram stories with SparkAR, the company’s augmented reality platform. Social media platforms seem to be actively adopting advanced technology. Last week, Reddit announced that it was launching an NFT marketplace to allow users to purchase avatars as profile pictures.
