Celebrating New Year’s Eve in the metaverse: five virtual parties to welcome 2023
In Brief
Decentraland, The Sandbox, One Times Square, Meta, and VRChat are organizing New Year’s Eve parties in the metaverse.
Millions of people are celebrating New Year’s Eve tomorrow, but those who don’t want to go out or organize a party themselves can still experience an immersive New Year’s celebration in the metaverse.
There were two big NYE parties in the metaverse last year. Time Square in New York City held a digital version of its New Year’s party in Decentraland, with almost 700 people in attendance. Paris Hilton also organized an iconic NYE party on her virtual island, ‘Paris Land,’ in Roblox.
Here are five virtual parties you can attend to welcome the year 2023:
MetaFest 2023 in Decentraland
Decenentraland is repeating last year’s party by inviting metaverse enthusiasts to join another New York’s Time Square New Year’s Eve ball on December 31. So far, around 18 people are planning to attend. In the iconic 26-story tower, four DJs—DJ GucciToe, DJ SoultryDubs, DJ Kharma, and DJ Category 5—will perform.
New Year’s Eve Ball Drop Celebration in the One Times Square metaverse
New York’s Time Square is hosting another metaverse party. The New Year’s Eve Ball Drop Celebration will take place via the One Times Square metaverse. There will be 12 camera views to experience the live event.
‘The Shaq-tacular Spectacular’ NYE party by Shaquille O’Neal at Meta Horizon Worlds and on Meta Quest TV
Basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal, also known as DJ Diesel, is hosting an immersive, one-hour-long New Year’s countdown on Meta platforms featuring Cardi B, Ludacris, Lil Yachty, Killer Mike, and Whipped Cream.
‘Midnight In The Metaverse’ in The Sandbox
The Sandbox has been hosting a Season’s Greetings celebration from December 20 to January 3, and the NYE party Midnight in The Metaverse is a part of it. Some famous musicians will perform at the New Year’s party, including Paris Hilton, Steve Aoki, Deadmau5, Blond:ish, Sueco, and Avenged Sevenfold. The event takes place at The Sandbox’s Club XYZ.
VRChat Square New Year’s World
VR fans can also avoid packed NYE parties to enjoy a fully immersive celebration in the comfort of their homes. VRchat has also unveiled its virtual New Year’s celebration, featuring 24 hours of streamed content, community posters, promo booths, global DJs, and ball drops for every time zone. The event is sponsored by Tundra Labs and Hololive TV. The popular Japanese techno duo DJ Sharpnel will be playing at the party, in a total of 22 DJ lineups.
