Apple Registers xrOS Wordmark for Upcoming AR/VR Headset

In Brief

Apple has registered the wordmark “xrOS” in New Zealand, indirectly revealing the name of the operating system for its upcoming AR/VR headset.

The headset’s operating system, xrOS, will have an interface resembling iOS, providing a sense of familiarity for Apple users.

Apple has recently registered a wordmark for “xrOS” in New Zealand, which indirectly reveals the name of the operating system for the company’s highly anticipated AR/VR headset. The registration was confirmed by the New Zealand Intellectual Property Office and was submitted by a shell company affiliated with Apple. However, this isn’t the first time Apple has secured the “xrOS” trademark in New Zealand, as it had already done so last year.

The discovery was made by Parker Ortolani, a keen observer in the tech industry.

The wordmark registration provides valuable insights into Apple’s plans for its upcoming headset, dubbed the Reality Pro, which is rumored to carry a hefty price tag of up to $3,000. It appears that the headset will run on an operating system known as xrOS, an abbreviation for “extended reality OS.” It’s a fitting choice considering the headset’s blend of augmented reality and virtual reality capabilities.

The registration in New Zealand also reveals that the company intends to use its signature San Francisco typeface for marketing the xrOS, similar to its usage in other operating systems like macOS, iOS, watchOS, and tvOS. While this information seems promising, the official confirmation is expected to come during the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) set to commence on June 5.

According to MacRumors, during the development phase, Apple internally referred to the software powering its headset as “Reality OS” or “rOS.” However, as the launch date drew near, the company decided to rebrand the operating system with a more distinctive name.

Recently, Palmer Luckey, the creator of Oculus, tested Apple’s mixed-reality headset. He tweeted that the device was “so good.”
