SAP Unveils Generative AI Capabilities for Developers

In Brief

SAP has unveiled a series of generative AI offerings to empower developers, including SAP Build Code solutions at its TechEd event.

Enterprise application software giant SAP today unveiled a series of generative AI offerings to empower developers, including SAP Build Code solutions, the vector engine on SAP HANA Cloud and a generative AI hub within SAP AI Core. The announcement was made at the SAP TechEd event in Bangalore, India.

SAP’s chief technology officer, Juergen Mueller, said today’s dynamic technology and business landscape means every developer needs to be an AI developer.

The innovations company is launching at SAP TechEd, from AI-infused pro-code tools to a one-stop shop to create generative AI extensions and applications on the SAP Business Technology Platform, support the developers in the AI revolution and provide them with resources they need to transform the way businesses run, he added.

As businesses seek to extract value from generative AI, effective collaboration between professional developers and citizen developers is paramount.

The company said Build Code solutions are tailored for SAP applications and the SAP ecosystem. They come equipped with AI-powered productivity tools designed for developers, optimized for Java and JavaScript development.

It is also integrated with SAP’s latest generative AI copilot, Joule – the AI copilot is engineered to comprehend the intricacies of business, thereby boosting productivity. It embeds code generation capabilities for creating data models, application logic, and test scripts.

Enhancing Data Management

In the realm of AI, high-quality data is the linchpin of success. SAP HANA Cloud aims to innovate in this domain by introducing new vector database features to its multimodal offerings and the best part – is at no additional cost to users. Vector data stores are engineered to manage unstructured data such as text, images, and audio.

These data stores provide long-term memory and enhanced context to AI models, making it easier to find and retrieve similar objects quickly. For instance, users can search for suppliers based on the language used in their contracts, enabling in-depth analysis of payment history and tracking individual orders.

The addition of these vector database features enriches interactions between large language models and an organization’s critical data. Moreover, it assists SAP developers in delivering unparalleled data insights within a secure and private framework, effectively reducing data-related issues.

For developers looking to make a profound impact and increase their efficiency, SAP has introduced the AI Foundation on the SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP). This serves as a one-stop shop for creating AI- and generative AI-powered extensions and applications on SAP BTP.

AI Foundation offers a comprehensive suite of tools, encompassing ready-to-use AI services, access to top-tier large language models, vector database capabilities, and AI runtime and lifecycle management. This all-in-one resource equips developers with the necessary tools to craft business-ready AI applications.

Upskilling Two Million Professionals by 2025

As the pace of technological innovation accelerates, the demand for skilled developers is surging globally. The company said it is addressing this demand by expanding its learning opportunities. As part of their commitment to upskilling two million professionals by 2025, SAP is launching new role-based certifications and providing free learning resources to back-end developers who use the ABAP Cloud development model.

These resources cover a wide array of topics, including ABAP development tools on SAP BTP and SAP S/4HANA, with the aim of enabling developers to create cloud-ready extensions that align with SAP’s clean core strategy.

Additionally, SAP has joined the Stanford HAI (Institute for Human-Centered AI) Corporate Affiliate Program. This collaboration will see SAP researchers and engineers work alongside the Stanford academic community, including research faculty and students, to explore the intersection of generative AI and business.

In a world where AI is no longer an option but a necessity, SAP’s commitment to supporting and empowering developers underscores the company’s determination to lead the way in the AI revolution.

With such tools and resources, SAP plans to equip developers to transform the way businesses operate and harness the true potential of artificial intelligence.
