The study involved 444 white-collar workers who were subjected to a series of tasks, comparing their performance with and without the assistance of ChatGPT, an advanced language model developed by OpenAI.
The participants, affectionately referred to as “horses,” demonstrated an incredible 37% increase in efficiency when utilizing ChatGPT. Notably, this significant improvement did not compromise the quality of their work, as assessed by a carefully designed evaluation system involving expert opinions. The researchers devised a range of typical tasks for the participants, who spent between 20 to 30 minutes completing them.
In a subsequent phase of the study, MIT researchers explored the long-term effects of using ChatGPT. As the participants became more familiar with the system, their productivity continued to rise. The researchers challenged the workers to complete as many tasks as possible within a fixed time frame, placing bets on the “horse races”.
To solidify the findings, the subjects repeated their work one final time. The results from the double elimination round confirmed the previous conclusions, cementing the positive impact of ChatGPT on productivity.
Beyond the immediate implications for workplace efficiency, the economic effect of integrating ChatGPT into everyday operations is projected to be substantial. The participants were asked to provide feedback on their motivation for using ChatGPT, shedding light on the system’s diverse applications. The responses indicated that ChatGPT significantly reduces brainstorming and drafting time, facilitating the initial stages of work. Furthermore, it is extensively used during the final editing process, streamlining the production of high-quality output.
Notably, the study revealed a fascinating aspect regarding writing skills. Respondents, regardless of their proficiency level, expressed nearly identical willingness to pay and value received from ChatGPT. This suggests that the AI tool can transform “bad writers” into proficient ones, while simultaneously accelerating the progress of already skilled writers.
The potential value of ChatGPT in the workplace is undeniable, as evidenced by the feedback received from participants. Astonishingly, respondents expressed their willingness to pay a monthly fee equivalent to 0.5% of their salary to access this invaluable tool. For an employee earning $100,000 per year, this amounts to nearly $500 annually, underscoring the perceived value and significance of ChatGPT in enhancing productivity.
