Hong Kong Police Launches Cyberdefender Metaverse to Fight Crime in Web3
In Brief
Hong Kong Police has launched CyberDefender Metaverse to fight crime in the virtual space.
The initiative aims to educate about threats and opportunities in the metaverse and raise awareness about new technology crimes.
Hong Kong police’s Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau (CSTCB) has launched the CyberDefender Metaverse platform, accompanied by the inaugural online event “Exploring the Metaverse.”
The initiative educates people about the threats and opportunities web3 and the metaverse pose. It also aims to raise awareness about new technology-related crimes and offers a unique experience to participants.
The CyberDefender Metaverse has introduced three virtual spaces to the public: CyberDefender City and the Web3 Gallery and Auditorium. The Gallery has welcomed over 350 visitors, while the online event attracted more than 120 young students, teachers, and parents since the platform began beta testing.
According to the press release, in 2022, Hong Kong recorded 2,336 cases of virtual-asset-related crimes, amounting to a loss of over $1.7 billion. This year, Hong Kong experienced a sharp rise in cases. There were 663 reported cases and a $570 million loss mark: a 44% and 75% increase, respectively, compared to last year. These incidents expose how cybercriminals exploit the public’s limited knowledge of virtual assets.
During the sharing session, Ip Cheuk-yu, the Chief Inspector of CSTCB, provided insights into the potential risks within the metaverse and the importance of crime prevention. He stressed that cybercrimes often seen online, such as investment fraud, unauthorized system access, theft, and sexual offenses, could also happen in the metaverse.
In February, Interpol announced its commitment to combating criminal activities in the virtual world. It revealed its plans to establish a secure server for law enforcement officers to investigate the metaverse and understand potential crimes and solutions.
