President Biden Gathers Experts in San Francisco to Discuss Responsible AI
In Brief
President Joe Biden plans to host a forum in San Francisco with technology leaders to discuss artificial intelligence.
The forum aims to address the challenges and opportunities presented by AI and explore ways to ensure its responsible and ethical implementation.
The meeting will include prominent figures such as Jim Steyer, Tristan Harris, Joy Buolamwini, and Oren Etzioni, who are renowned for their work in advocating for ethical AI practices.
As AI becomes more pervasive and powerful, it raises new questions and challenges for society. U.S. President Joe Biden will explore some of these issues in a meeting with AI experts and researchers in San Francisco on Tuesday.
The meeting is part of the Biden administration’s efforts to develop a comprehensive approach to AI regulation and governance and support research and education in this emerging field. The president will be joined by leaders from academia, industry, and civil society, who have diverse perspectives and expertise on AI.
The experts include Jim Steyer, the CEO of Common Sense Media, a nonprofit organization that advocates for children’s digital well-being; Tristan Harris, the co-founder of the Center for Human Technology, a nonprofit organization that aims to realign technology with humanity’s best interests; Joy Buolamwini, the founder of the Algorithmic Justice League, a movement that fights bias and discrimination in AI; and Oren Etzioni, the former CEO of the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, a research institute that pursues AI for the common good.
The president hopes to learn from their insights and experiences and to discuss how the federal government can work with them and other stakeholders to promote responsible AI innovation that benefits Americans.
“These experts include those who have been outspoken on the impact of AI on jobs, children, bias and prejudice, the risks posed by AI if it isn’t properly regulated, and also those who understand the benefits it provides for education and medicine if this technology is built safely from the start,”
White House official said.
AI is a top priority for Biden, according to the White House. White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients is leading efforts to develop actions on AI regulation in the coming weeks. The principals at the White House engage in discussions about AI two to three times a week, actively seeking commitments from top AI companies. These discussions revolve around addressing challenges from both the government and private sector.
Biden urged caution in AI chatbot development, emphasizing the need for companies to prioritize safety before public release. In April, he consulted with science and technology advisors, including representatives from Google and Microsoft, to discuss the risks and opportunities of artificial intelligence. In addition, the Biden administration announced a $140 million investment in AI research.
