American interdisciplinary artist Stephanie Dinkins is located in Brooklyn, New York. She is renowned for her artistic interpretations on the intersections of history, gender, and race with artificial intelligence (AI). Her objective is to “create a unique culturally attuned AI entity in collaboration with coders, engineers and in close consultation with local communities of color that reflects and is empowered to work toward the goals of its community.”
The two projects for which Dinkins is most well-known are Not the Only One, a multigenerational artificially intelligent memoir trained off of three generations of Dinkins’s family, and Conversations with Bina48, a series of conversations between Dinkins and the first social, artificially intelligent humanoid robot BINA48, which looks like a black woman.

The voice-interactive chatbot Not the Only One (N’TOO) was taught to narrate a multigenerational tale using data from her family members. Not The Only One, also known as N’TOO or NTOO, was characterized by Dinkins as an intergenerational memoir of a single Black American family and a “experimental” work presented from the “mind” of an artificial intelligence that is always growing. N’TOO employs a deep learning method called a recursive neural network. It is a voice-activated AI robot that was created, trained, and matched with the goals and requirements of the underrepresented Black and Brown communities in the technology industry. An other definition of NTOO is a “physically embodied artificially intelligent agent that senses and acts on its world.”
