Danish politician Margrethe Vestager has been a European Commissioner for Competition since 2014 and the Executive Vice President of the European Commission for A Europe Fit for the Digital Age since December 2019. In addition to belonging to the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) on the European level, Vestager is a member of the Danish Social Liberal Party.

She worked for Poul Nyrup Rasmussen’s Danish administrations as the Minister of Education from 1998 to 2001 and the Minister of Ecclesiastical Affairs from 1998 to 2000 before entering the European Commission. From 2011 until 2014, she led the Social Liberals and held the positions of Interior and Minister of Economic Affairs under Helle Thorning-Schmidt.

Vestager became the Commissioner for Competition in the Juncker Commission after being selected as Denmark’s European Commissioner following the 2014 European Parliament election. She was one of ALDE’s seven front-runners in the 2019 European Parliament race. Vestager received a nomination from the Renew Europe group to run for President of the European Commission following the election. Vestager was put forward once again for the position of Denmark’s Commissioner following Ursula von der Leyen’s election as President. Retaining her portfolio on competition, she was appointed as one of the three Executive Vice Presidents of the Commission, overseeing “A Europe Fit for the Digital Age”.

Vestager has become well-known throughout the world as a result of her investigations, penalties, and legal actions against large multinational corporations such as Google, Apple Inc., Amazon, Facebook, Qualcomm, Siemens, Alstom, and Gazprom while serving as Commissioner for Competition. “The world’s most famous regulator” and “the rich world’s most powerful trustbuster” are two ways to characterize her. Throughout her term as the European Commissioner for Competition, Vestager has faced criticism from US President Donald Trump and American corporations for her efforts.

2023

The EU aims to regulate artificial intelligence (AI) as part of its digital strategy in order to improve the environment for the advancement and application of this cutting-edge technology. Numerous advantages, including improved healthcare, cleaner and safer transportation, more effective manufacturing, and more affordable and sustainable energy, may be brought about by AI.

The first AI regulatory framework in the EU was suggested by the European Commission. It claims that AI systems that have a variety of uses are analyzed and categorized based on the danger they provide to consumers. There will be varying degrees of regulation depending on the danger levels. These will be the first AI regulations in history if they are accepted.

Parliament’s priority is to make sure that AI systems used in the EU are safe, transparent, traceable, non-discriminatory and environmentally friendly. AI systems should be overseen by people, rather than by automation, to prevent harmful outcomes. Parliament also wants to establish a technology-neutral, uniform definition for AI that could be applied to future AI systems.

On 14 June 2023, MEPs adopted Parliaments negotiating position on the AI Act. The talks will now begin with EU countries in the Council on the final form of the law. The aim is to reach an agreement by the end of this year.
