American musician and composer Holly Herndon is located in Berlin, Germany. She followed a career in music abroad after obtaining her doctorate at Stanford University’s Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics and studying composition there. Herndon’s music is mostly computer-based, frequently incorporates human singing voices (including her own), and frequently creates unique instruments and vocal processing using the visual programming language Max/MSP. Her music has been released via 4AD and RVNG International. Proto, her third full-length album, was made available on May 10th, 2019.
Herndon has collaborated on several artistic endeavors in addition to her solo work, including as projects with Chicago-based producer Jlin, Dutch design company Metahaven, and Iranian writer Reza Negarestani. Mathew Dryhurst is a longtime collaborator of hers. Notable for their work examining the potential of utilizing Web 3.0, blockchain, and artificial intelligence in content creation are Herndon and Dryhurst. Interdependence is a podcast that Herndon and Dryhurst host where they talk about technology and the arts with guests that are at the forefront of fusing the two fields.
As she did on May 15, Holly Herndon offered some guidance to musicians on how the music business should adapt to AI’s numerous advances. She advised against giving up the rights to one’s voice for programs that may utilize it for generative AI, at least not immediately away. Herndon clarified that the new technology is vulnerable to manipulation because of the lack of knowledge surrounding it. “Artists, it is a good idea not to sign any contract regarding usage of your voice in an AI context,” the author stated.
The artificial intelligence projects Holly Herndon has worked on include “Holly+,” a virtual “AI twin” that Herndon and her boyfriend Matt Dryhurst created, and “Spawn,” a “AI baby” that helped create her 2019 album Proto. Holly+ was recently utilized by Herndon to record a version of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene.”
