The most well-known contribution to the popularization of concepts surrounding helpful artificial intelligence is the hypothesis that there may not be a “fire alarm” for AI. Eliezer S. Yudkowsky is an American artificial intelligence researcher and author of books on decision theory and ethics. He founded the Machine Intelligence Research Institute (MIRI), a nonprofit private research organization with headquarters in Berkeley, California, and serves as a research fellow there. The 2014 book Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies by philosopher Nick Bostrom was informed by his research on the possibility of a runaway intelligence explosion.
In a 2023 Yudkowsky addressed the dangers of artificial intelligence opinion piece for Time magazine. He suggested measures to reduce this risk, such as “destroy[ing] a rogue datacenter by airstrike” or putting a complete stop to AI research and development. A reporter questioned President Joe Biden about AI safety during a press briefing after reading the story, which contributed to popularizing the discussion about AI alignment.
