OpenAI’s GPT Models Now Available to Government Customers Through Microsoft Azure

Microsoft has made generative AI tools available to Azure Government customers through a new Azure OpenAI Service to help government agencies improve efficiency, enhance productivity, and unlock new insights from their data.
Azure OpenAI Service provides government clients access to OpenAI’s powerful language models, including GPT-4, GPT-3, and Embeddings. Clients have the flexibility to customize these models for their specific tasks, including, but not limited to, content generation, summarization, semantic search, and natural language-to-code translation.
The Azure OpenAI Service is available via Microsoft’s web-based interface in the Azure AI Studio and through using REST APIs or Python SDK. Azure Government customers or partners can implement advanced AI algorithms at scale while developers can use Azure OpenAI Service to access pre-trained GPT models to speed up the deployment of AI-enabled applications.
“Currently, large language models that power generative AI tools live in the commercial cloud. For government customers, Microsoft has developed a new architecture that enables government agencies to securely access the large language models in the commercial environment from Azure Government allowing those users to maintain the stringent security requirements necessary for government cloud operations,” Microsoft wrote in a blog post.
To provide additional layers of security for sensitive government data, access to the Azure OpenAI services is available through Azure Government, which peers directly to the commercial Microsoft Azure network. This includes routing and transport capabilities to the internet and the Microsoft Corporate network.
All Azure traffic is encrypted and stays entirely within the Microsoft global network backbone so that it does not enter the public internet. Microsoft says that its government customers’ data will not be used to train large language models. Access to the Azure OpenAI Service requires registration and is only available to approved enterprise customers.
