OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is proposing solutions to address the issues that resulted in the ban of the chatbot in Italy, as reported by the country’s data protection agency Garante.

On Wednesday night (April 5), the Italian SA had a videoconference meeting with OpenAI, which was attended by Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, along with several other representatives from the company and the whole panel of commissioners from the Italian SA.

Following an investigation into a suspected privacy violation, OpenAI had to close down the chatbot in Italy last week. Garante cited OpenAI’s failure to verify the age of ChatGPT users and the company’s lack of legal justification for the collection and storage of personal data as reasons for the ban.

OpenAI stated that it adheres to relevant personal data protection laws and is ready to collaborate with the Italian regulators to handle the worries brought up by Garante regarding ChatGPT. Garante mentioned that the objective wasn’t to impede the advancement of AI and technological innovation, but it underscored the importance of following the laws that secure the personal data of Italian and European citizens.

OpenAI ensured its dedication to improving transparency in using personal data and proper protection of children. The company has committed to presenting a document outlining its proposed measures to the Italian SA by April 6 in response to the concerns. The regulator stated that it would assess the suggestions presented by OpenAI, but the process could take a few days.

Italy’s prohibition has sparked the curiosity of other privacy watchdogs in Europe. The countries are investigating whether more severe actions are necessary for chatbots and whether to collaborate on such actions.

Today, OpenAI published a blog post titled “Our Approach to AI Safety,” in which the company outlines its enhanced approach to safety and privacy, as well as its commitment to data security and finding a solution for age verification.
