Chinese State Media and Payment Association Sound Alarm on AI Products, including ChatGPT

Chinese State Media and Payment Association Sound Alarm on AI Products, including ChatGPT

A Chinese state-run newspaper has expressed concern over the growing hype and market bubble surrounding artificial intelligence technology, including intelligent chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, SCMP reported. The article “Bubble prevention needed while promoting AI” was published by the Economic Daily, a newspaper overseen by the ruling Chinese Communist Party’s propaganda department.

The Economic Daily’s warning suggests that the current market for AI technology may be overinflated and needs regulation to prevent potential economic risks. The article highlights the popular chatbot, ChatGPT, which has gained widespread attention for its ability to generate human-like text responses using deep learning algorithms.

While acknowledging the potential benefits of AI technology, the newspaper urges caution against the excessive hype and unrealistic expectations that may lead to a bubble in the industry. This caution is particularly relevant given the Chinese government’s push to establish a dominant position in AI development.

Reuters also reported on Monday that the Payment and Clearing Association of China, run by the country’s central bank, cautioned against using AI tools, mentioning ChatGPT and citing the potential for risks like cross-border data leaks. The association emphasized the need for payment industry employees to adhere to laws and regulations when using such tools and to avoid sharing confidential information related to China and the finance industry.

OpenAI’s chatbot is banned for users in China. Nevertheless, many Chinese companies are eager to integrate this technology into their products and develop competing solutions, Reuters wrote. Although creating OpenAI accounts isn’t possible for Chinese residents, some have found ways to access the chatbot by using VPNs and foreign phone numbers to bypass restrictions. As a result, there is significant interest in AI technology within China, despite its limited accessibility.

Chinese tech companies like Baidu and Alibaba are rapidly developing their own AI chatbots, such as Ernie Bot and Tongyi Qianwen, to tap into the increasing demand for AI technology.
