NFTs Are Coming to Instagram in Several Months, Zuckerberg Confirmed
At the South by Southwest (SXSW) conference held in Austin, Texas, the CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, discussed the metaverse and noted Instagram’s plans to integrate NFTs. Without giving many details or the exact date, Zuckerberg ensured that Meta’s team is actively working to bring non-fungible tokens into the platform “in the near term.”
Instagram should enable users to mint and showcase their NFTs and use them as profile pictures. In January, Twitter rolled out the feature to allow users to upload their verified NFTs as a hexagon-shaped profile picture; Reddit followed the path and tested NFT profile picture functionality less than a week after Twitter’s announcement.
The entrepreneur believes that digital items, for instance, virtual clothing, could one day have a market as extensive as the one for physical items. In the SXSW interview, he also mentioned that Meta could one day integrate NFTs into its metaverse:
“I would hope that you know, the clothing that your avatar is wearing in the metaverse, you know, can be basically minted as an NFT and you can take it between your different places. There’s like a bunch of technical things that need to get worked out before that’ll really be seamless to happen.”
