Midjourney, Anthropic, and other AI startups are experiencing a staff shortage; there are funds, but there are no good-level researchers

In Brief

AI startups are currently facing a staff shortage.

The companies have the funding to hire new employees, but there is a lack of qualified researchers and developers to fill the positions.

The staff shortage is having a negative impact on the companies’ ability to develop new models.

Midjourney, a research and development company, is currently facing a staff shortage. The company has the funding to hire new employees, but there is a lack of good-level researchers and developers to fill the positions. The shortage has caused delays in the development of new models outside of text-to-image, although there is a desire to do so.

The workforce shortage at Midjourney can be attributed to a number of things. First of all, the business employs cutting-edge technology, so it requires top staff who fit the high-tech knowledge requirements. Although the company has a sizable budget for salaries and perks, there are still only so many people available with the required skills and a lot of offering top dollar for their skillsets. It can therefore be challenging to compete for the best staff with other emerging AI companies that participate in aggressive headhunting.

The staff shortage at Midjourney has been having a negative impact on the company’s ability and speed to develop new models. Due to the difficulty in locating qualified researchers on the open market, Midjourney does not even have any open positions.

Not only did Midjourney experience a staff shortage at the beginning of the year, but another up-and-coming AI startup, Anthropic, announced that it was actively hiring research engineers and scientists.
