Miami Dade College has launched its digital twin campus called Metaversity. With the new platform, students and educators can now attend classes, collaborate on projects, and interact with one another in an entirely virtual environment.
Created by VR/AR educational platform builder VictoryXR, the digital campus will offer students an immersive educational experience in the metaverse. VictoryXR recreated the real college’s buildings, complementing its facilities and enabling students to attend virtual classes and events, cruise through campus, and more.
Metaversity also hopes to increase engagement and collaboration while innovating the teaching-learning experience. The significant advantage for Metaversity students is no geographical restrictions; they can join classes from around the world.
The virtual campus expects classes to begin in the fall of this year, with VR-enhanced courses and academic labs included in the program.
“This project offers a unique opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to explore and create immersive virtual environments, fostering innovation and transformative learning outcomes. We want to continue offering educational resources that prepare our graduates to thrive in a digital world where technology evolves by the minute,”
MDC President Madeline Pumariega stated.
Miami Dade College is one of the first educational entities in the US to create a twin metaverse campus. However, in August 2022, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) became the world’s first to develop a Metaverse campus, connecting its campuses in Hong Kong and Guangzhou.
In April, leading metaverse platform The Sandbox partnered with HKUST and the Hong Kong Design Institute to offer virtual experiences in the metaverse. The two educational institutions joined The Sandbox’s Mega City 3, a program that includes scientific programs, gaming experiences, seminars, and workshops conducted by The Sandbox.
