Meta’s Metaverse Platform Horizon Worlds Introduces “Quests” to Increase User Engagement

In Brief

Meta’s social VR platform, Horizon Worlds, has launched a new feature called “Quests” that allows users to complete in-game missions and earn virtual rewards while exploring the platform’s different worlds.

The new update is intended to improve user engagement by providing users with an incentive to return to the platform.

Meta’s Metaverse Platform Horizon Worlds Introduces “Quests” to Increase User Engagement

Meta’s Horizon Worlds has released a new feature called “quests,” which allows users to complete in-game missions and earn virtual rewards, such as clothing, while exploring the VR social network. The social media giant hopes this new update will increase user engagement and retention by giving users a reason to return to the more entertaining and interactive platform.

Meta will gradually roll out the feature to more Horizon Worlds players in the upcoming weeks. For now, quests are only available to test group users in the new world of Giant Mini Paddle Golf. In the experience, players use paddles to hit the ball in the correct direction to get the lowest score and compete against one another.

The introduction of quests on Meta’s Horizon Worlds could potentially keep users more engaged, which has been a challenge for the platform. Currently, many experiences within Horizon Worlds have low player counts; last October, the monthly active user number was below 200,000.

Quests could provide an incentive for players to spend more time within the platform, exploring different worlds and completing quests. When the platform expands to web and mobile, possibly this year, quests may make the Horizon Worlds experiences more appealing to a broader audience.

Meta recently unveiled plans to introduce 20 additional Horizon experiences created by third-party studios. The company also seeks to make the metaverse platform available for users aged 13–17 to expand Horizon Worlds’ user base. However, senators are trying to prevent Meta from doing so, as they believe the platform isn’t suitable for young people and includes “toxic product ads, data collection, physical health issues, and exposure to abusive behavior.”
