Meta’s Chief AI Scientist Yann LeCun Counters AI Domination Worries

In Brief

One of the world’s leading AI experts, Yann LeCun, asserts that concerns about AI taking over the world are unfounded and based on a misunderstanding of the technology.

During a press event in Paris, LeCun discussed the current state and limitations of AI systems, highlighting their inability to exhibit common sense and reasoning abilities despite generating natural language.

LeCun believes that while machines may eventually surpass human intelligence, it is a distant future and can be avoided if unsafe.

Yann LeCun, the chief AI scientist at Meta, said that computers are far from achieving human-level intelligence and that fears of AI taking over the world are based on a misunderstanding of the technology. LeCun, one of the leading experts in artificial intelligence, has dismissed the idea that AI could pose a threat to humanity as “preposterously ridiculous.”

Meta's Chief AI Scientist Yann LeCun Counters AI Domination Worries

He spoke at a press event in Paris on Tuesday, where he explained the current state and limitations of AI systems that can generate natural language but lack common sense and reasoning abilities. LeCun said that computers would surpass human intelligence someday, but that was far in the future, and we can avoid building it if it’s unsafe.

He dismissed the idea that AI would dominate the world as a reflection of human tendencies toward machines. He also argued that restricting AI research would be a grave error.

“It’s as if you asked in 1930 to someone how are you going to make a turbo-jet safe? Turbo-jets were not invented yet in 1930, same as human level AI has not been invented yet. Turbo jets were eventually made incredibly reliable and safe,” LeCun said, highlighting that the same would happen with AI.

During the discussion, LeCun stated that machines surpassing human intelligence in the future should not be perceived as a threat. He noted the benefits of this advancement, envisioning AI assistants that are smarter than individuals, acting as supportive tools in daily life.

LeCun emphasized the importance of ensuring that these AI systems remain under human control and subservient to them. Furthermore, he dismissed the notion popularized by science fiction that robots would harbor intentions of world domination, highlighting the absence of a connection between intelligence and a desire to take over.

In other news, Meta announced granting researchers access to certain components of a novel AI model called I-JEPA. According to the company, this model can analyze and effectively complete unfinished images, surpassing the accuracy of existing models. Unlike conventional generative AI models that solely rely on neighboring pixels, I-JEPA leverages background knowledge about the world to fill in the missing elements of images.
