Meta Quest v56 Introduces Swipe Typing on Direct Touch Keyboard
In Brief
Meta’s Quest v56 update brings new features to its VR headsets, such as a swipe keyboard and a direct touch tablet.
The update also improves the display quality for Quest Pro users and fixes some bugs.
The new features aim to enhance the VR experience and productivity of Quest users, as Meta faces increasing competition from other tech companies in the VR market.
Meta has released a new update for its Quest platform, bringing new features and improvements to its virtual reality headsets. The Quest v56 update, currently available for users in the public test channel, introduces a direct touch swipe keyboard that lets users type faster and more accurately in VR. It also adds a local dimming control for Quest Pro owners, allowing them to adjust the brightness and contrast of the OLED display.
The update includes bug fixes and performance enhancements for various apps and games, for instance, a new appearance of the Wi-Fi panel. However, the most significant feature is the VR swipe keyboard.
To enable the swipe keyboard on Quest 2 or Quest Pro, update to v56 and go to “Experimental” settings. The feature uses hand-tracking to let you swipe in text on a virtual keyboard, which is faster and easier than tapping letters. According to Mixed-Reality, the swipe keyboard may be slow or inaccurate at first, but it should improve after restarting the headset or swiping more slowly.

Brad Lynch, a YouTuber and VR expert, said that it’s “probably the best feature” he has ever seen “added to a VR headset.”
Another significant feature enables users to work on multiple tasks simultaneously using the Direct Touch Tablet. The feature enhances the productivity and efficiency of the VR environment by allowing users to easily switch between different applications and windows.

Why Meta Needs to Embrace Experimentation with Quest Headsets Now, More Than Ever
Meta’s leadership position in the VR space has been threatened. The VR industry is expanding, and new headsets are emerging from leading tech companies like Apple, Sony, and Valve. To stay as the industry’s leader, Meta should offer unique and innovative VR experiences that no one else can provide.
The demand for immersive VR experiences is surging like never before. As more consumers seek to escape the confines of the physical world, Meta must respond with innovative content and features. By intensifying experimentation with Quest headsets, Meta can cater to the varied interests and preferences of users, ensuring a robust VR ecosystem that keeps them engaged.
A month ago, Meta announced its latest VR headset, the Quest 3. The device features color mixed reality, a blend of AR and VR elements, for an enhanced immersive experience. The Quest 3 has a new Qualcomm chipset, a sleek design, and 128GB storage for $499.99. It’s compatible with Quest 2 games and will be available in fall.
