FC Barcelona sold its first NFT for $693,000 at Sotheby’s in New York
Football Club Barcelona’s first digital collectible, “In a Way, Immortal,” labeled as an NFT masterpiece, was sold for $693,000 at Sotheby’s auction in New York. The NFT is an audio-visual digital artwork by Eric Sas & Alan Company from BCN Visuals. The sale began on July 21 and ended on July 29, with 30 interested investors.
“In a Way, Immortal” features the legendary football player Johan Cruyff from the Netherlands, who played for FC Barcelona for over five years. The digital piece represented Cruyff’s iconic moment on December 22, 1973, when he “flew” to score a goal against the goalkeeper Miguel Reina of Atlético Madrid. The title of the artwork is also a quoted phrase by Cruyff.
“The buyer has also purchased four additional NFTs that include a static image of the animated version and becomes a ‘Barça Digital Ambassador,’ which gives them the chance to enjoy various VIP benefits and experiences with the Club,” FC Barcelona reported.
FC’s first NFT was minted on the Polygon blockchain. In a Twitter post, Polygon wrote that “In a Way, Immortal” was “one of the most valued NFTs in the history of sport.”
The NFT is the first out of ten that FC Barcelona will release in the coming months. Each NFT features some of the football club’s legendary moments and celebrates its legacy and historical heritage. The club is committed to adopting innovative technology and using it to commemorate moments and inspire supporters. FC Barcelona regards NFTs as a “premium experience product.”

Sotheby’s is a fine art company and auction house headquartered in New York and founded in London in 1744. In 2021, the auction house sold $100 million worth of NFT art. In addition, it has a selection of rare digital collectibles called “Sotheby’s Metaverse.”
