Premier League partners with Sorare for NFT fantasy soccer game
In Brief
NFT-based fantasy soccer game Sorare has secured an exclusive multi-year deal allowing players to buy and use Premier League-authorized NFTs.
Soccer fans can now collect official digital Premier League player cards and create custom teams to win rewards.
The NFT-based fantasy sports game Sorare has secured a four-year agreement with the Premier League to feature officially licensed player cards from the top-tier global soccer league. The deal allows users to collect and trade digital player cards from all 20 teams in the English league to play in Sorare’s fantasy football game.
The cost of the deal is estimated to be tens of millions of dollars per year, with the final payment for each year dependent on performance, according to sources familiar with the agreement.
Sorare, a Paris-based startup backed by star soccer players Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi, offers an opportunity to participate in five-a-side fantasy soccer games. The outcome is determined by the actual performance of players during live matches.
Sorare has announced the addition of two new features to its game, including the capability to compete using league-specific player cards and a “financial fair play” option to restrict users from creating unbeatable, all-star teams.
The Premier League competition follows the same rules and gameplay as Sorare, and it’s free to play. The instructions include the following:
- Choose eight players from global professional leagues, including Europe’s top leagues
- Build your lineup by scouting, buying, selling, and trading digital player cards
- Form a five-player team and participate in free, bi-weekly tournaments
- Compete with other managers globally for rewards based on your players’ real-life performance.
“The way that supporters follow their favourite teams and players is evolving and the Premier League is always looking for ways to engage with fans. Sorare’s digital cards and innovative online game represent a new way for them to feel closer to the Premier League whether they are watching in the stadium or from around the world,”
said Richard Masters, Chief Executive of the Premier League.
The news arrives amid a significant decrease in NFT trading activity. The value of NFTs has fallen drastically due to the current crypto market downturn, further compounded by the bankruptcy of FTX in recent months.
Sorare also signed a deal with the NBA in September to launch an NFT fantasy basketball game. While in May, the Web3 company partnered with MLB for an NFT fantasy baseball game.
