Leaked Details Suggest Apple’s Headset Include a Plethora of iPad Apps, Gaming, Workouts, and Sports Content
In Brief
Apple is working to build software and services for its upcoming mixed-reality headset, which is expected to debut at an event in June and will cost approximately $3,000.
Apple is adapting iPad apps for the mixed-reality headset, and the device’s interface will allow users to access numerous already-available apps on the App Store.
The offerings will include gaming, fitness, and collaboration tools, new versions of Apple’s existing iPad features, and services for watching sports.
Apple is working hard to create software and services for its forthcoming mixed-reality headset. The tech giant aims to convince skeptical consumers of the headset’s potential by offering apps that use its unique 3D interface. The planned offerings include fitness, gaming, collaboration tools, updated versions of existing iPad features, and sports-watching services. The headset, which is expected to retail for roughly $3,000, is slated to be unveiled in June and go on sale in the coming months.
Apple expert Mark Gurman, as reported by Bloomberg, suggests that Apple’s headset could run modified versions of iPad apps and that users will be able to access millions of pre-existing apps on the App Store through the headset’s new interface. The company is working on changing iPad apps for the mixed-reality headset to combine virtual and augmented reality.
Apple will optimize its own apps, such as Calendar, Contacts, Files, Home, Messages, Music, Notes, Photos, Reminders, and Safari for the headset. Users will be able to run multiple apps simultaneously and switch between them based on their location.
The Fitness+ app will allow users to work out with a virtual reality instructor, while the Health app will guide users through meditations with graphics, sounds, and voice-overs. Apple will focus on immersive sports viewing experiences for MLB and MLS content and have a dedicated TV app for VR video-watching.
The mixed-reality headset will offer a FaceTime experience that utilizes Memoji-like avatars and virtual meeting spaces. There will also be a Books app designed for reading in VR, a Camera app that uses the headset’s cameras, and a version of Freeform adapted to a 3D interface for collaborative projects.
Bloomberg also added that users would have the ability to control the mixed-reality headset with hand and eye gestures. The device can detect where the user is looking and respond to pinch gestures for selecting items and navigating menus. It will include an in-air virtual keyboard, as well as the option to connect to an actual keyboard for better productivity.
The home screen of the headset will resemble that of an iPad and include a control center for adjusting Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and volume. Similar to the iPad, it will feature a biometric system for unlocking the device, but it will use eye scanning instead of facial recognition or fingerprint authentication.
