ChatGPT’s Website Traffic Declines for the First Time
In Brief
ChatGPT has recently encountered its first-ever decline in traffic since its launch in November 2022, data by Similarweb shows.
In June, global traffic experienced a significant 9.7% decrease, with unique visitors dropping by 5.7%. Meanwhile, visitor engagement declined by 8.5% in May.
Still, ChatGPT continues to outperform Microsoft’s Bing and Character.AI.
ChatGPT has witnessed the first-ever decline in traffic since it launched in November 2022. In June, the OpenAI chatbot’s global traffic decreased by 9.7%, and unique visitors dropped by 5.7%. Visitor engagement on the website has also experienced an 8.5% decline in May, as measured by the duration of minutes per visit.
ChatGPT made history earlier this year by achieving a remarkable record of 100 million monthly active users in only two months since its public launch. No other user application has ever accomplished this before. TikTok and Instagram, for example, needed nine months and two and a half years, respectively, to reach the same level of popularity.
Nevertheless, ChatGPT continues to outperform Microsoft’s Bing and Character.AI, the second most popular standalone AI chatbot site, in attracting global visitors. Microsoft supports OpenAI’s GPT-4 algorithm integrated into Bing’s chat service, which is available for free.
Similarweb noted that although Character.AI experienced a significant month-over-month decline of 32% in worldwide visits, its traffic remains substantially higher compared to its initial stages in June 2022.
The slightly faded excitement of the chatbot may have been caused by the emergence of competing language models that also garnered considerable attention as users are experimenting with other generative AI tools.
Following a peak in early June, the number of downloads for ChatGPT’s iPhone app has declined, as indicated by Sensor Tower data. The app launched in May and has been downloaded 17 million times. Initially, the app was only available for iOS users based in the US, but it achieved a milestone of half a million downloads in less than a week after it launched.
