Cryptocurrency startup Keyp introduces a cold wallet device with a Nintendo Game Boy cartridge. Called “Game Wallet,” the device is a cryptocurrency cold storage that is developed with the use of a handheld device. The GameBoy cartridge’s new application was developed by a long-time Solidity developer Joseph Schiarizzi.
The technology allows all Nintendo Game Boy owners to use an offline device to generate mnemonic phrases for crypto wallets. Notably, users can create the seed phrase in a gamified form. Players introduce randomness as they explore the virtual world and complete quests. Then, the seed phrases are generated based on a hash of the previous 500 button presses that a user has made. Individuals can discover their phrases by talking to one of the non-playing characters.
“We converted an open-source assembly implementation of the sha256 hashing algorithm used to generate cryptographic seed phrases based on BIP-39 into GBAssembly, the language all Game Boy games are programmed in,” explains the project’s website.
It is important to note that Game Boys have never accessed the internet, meaning the devices can not be attacked through digital phishing. In addition, the project’s website emphasizes that there will be no firmware updates ever. This might most attract cryptocurrency holders, as last week, the largest crypto cold wallet manufacturer Ledger announced “Ledger Recover,” an update that allows users to back up their recovery phrases. In fact, Game Wallet’s website states: “Recent events have led to uncertainty around hardware wallets, which demonstrates a need for a simple and low-tech alternative.”
At the moment of writing, the Game Wallets are not available for purchase. Interested individuals can sign up for updates on a dedicated website.
