MetaMask Announces Open Beta for Snaps, Elevating Cross-Chain Innovation

MetaMask unveiled its MetaMask Snaps system, an addition to its Ethereum wallet that promises to redefine user experiences and the future of decentralized computing. According to MetaMask, this development is the result of years of meticulous research and hard work by a dedicated team.
“Some time ago, Dan Finlay [the co-founder of MetaMask] had an idea to build a platform that invites the developer community to build their own solutions to the hardest problems in web3, without MetaMask’s approval,” MetaMask wrote on X. “This idea was the start of a vision to build a permissionless ecosystem in which any developer can build a feature for MetaMask and anyone can install and use it, customizing and enhancing their web3 experience.”
MetaMask Snaps includes a system that introduces a set of APIs and collaboration with partners to support new blockchains, transaction security providers and various notification systems, including a chat functionality.
The company is inviting to the community to contribute solutions to complex problems, lowering barriers and costs to foster innovation in the world of distributed computing. Moreover, Snaps aims to be a secure extensibility system, the company’s step towards a more collaborative future for computing.
The company said that Snaps not only enhances functionality but also boasts a world-class permission system, offering users the ability to securely review risks before integrating new features. Future plans include new account types, Snap-defined assets, and home screen widgets.
While the current Snaps system requires approval for installation due to safety measures, the long-term goal is permissionless computing, bridging the gap between walled gardens and unrestricted environments. This represents a pivotal step toward safe, user-custodial computing.
“Snaps run in a sandboxed environment and use a permissions model to protect your data and respect your consent. Snaps do not have access to your MetaMask account data,”
MetaMask wrote.
Developers eager to explore this platform can install Flask, MetaMask’s developer-centric distribution, and begin experimenting with Snaps.
