In Brief

Native Foreign created CRITTERZ, the first animated short film utilizing the generative AI power of Dall-E.

The technological landscape is ever-changing, and nothing has made it more evident than the newest and most ambitious project from OpenAI, Dall-E. This artificial intelligence (AI) application takes natural language and creates images, objects, styles, and characters based on received prompts. In celebration of one year since its release, Native Foreign has gone one step further and created CRITTERZ, the first-ever animated short film utilizing the generative AI power of Dall-E.

The entire production process was managed by Native Foreign, who was responsible for everything, starting from the initial designs to the final render. Native Foreign created CRITTERZ by uniting the creativeness of the OpenAI program with the skills and expertise of their team of Emmy award-winning animators and behind-the-scenes professionals.

CRITTERZ is a five-minute showcase of modern animation that communicates the capabilities of OpenAI while delivering a fun and compelling story. The entire animation was created by the AI programmed at OpenAI, which designed the characters and scenes within the film universe. The animators then used the images from Dall-E as the basis for their work, bringing the world of CRITTERZ to life by making the characters move and interact.

The team of animators used a mix of technologies and techniques to produce the fully animated short, including animation, motion capture, rotoscoping, and CGI, to provide accurate and life-like motions to the characters and objects within the film. What’s more, the animators sought to create a unique aesthetic for the animation that utilized various visual techniques in the film space to pull the viewer into the world of CRITTERZ.

Overall, CRITTERZ is a project that merges traditional animation and filmmaking techniques with modern AI algorithms. With its release, we see the potential for much greater experiments merging the two worlds together to create some truly wonderful and visually stunning films.
