Is ChatGPT Facing a Global Ban? Other Countries Might Follow Italy’s Lead in Restricting OpenAI’s Chatbot

In Brief

Italy’s ban on ChatGPT has prompted neighboring European countries, such as France and Germany, to consider similar restrictions.

The EU is currently working on an AI Act to regulate the tech sector.

Chatgpt ban

Italy’s recent decision to ban ChatGPT has raised concerns about the potential risks and challenges posed by AI. As a result, other European countries are considering implementing similar restrictions, sparking debates about the role of AI chatbots in society and their impact on privacy, data security, and user safety. In response to these concerns, the European Union is currently developing the Artificial Intelligence Act, which aims to establish a unified regulatory and legal framework for AI across its member states.

The EU AI Act, the first law on artificial intelligence proposed by a major regulator, aims to strike a balance between protecting individuals from negative impacts, such as discriminatory decision-making and erosion of privacy, and promoting innovation and competitiveness in the EU’s digital economy.

The Italian data protection authority on Friday placed an immediate ban on ChatGPT, accusing it of violating privacy. OpenAI is now facing pressure to address the concerns raised by the Italian data protection authority. Failure to address them within a reasonable timeframe could result in significant fines for the company.

First EU Country to Follow Italy’s Footsteps Could Be Germany

Ulrich Kelber, the German commissioner for data protection, has informed Handelsblatt newspaper that due to data security concerns, Germany may also consider blocking ChatGPT.

Kelber stated that taking similar action in Germany as in Italy is possible, but the decision would be under state jurisdiction. However, Kelber did not provide any details regarding any specific plans for such action, Reuters reported.

The data protection authorities in France and Ireland have confirmed that they have contacted the Italian data regulator to discuss the findings regarding ChatGPT. On the other hand, the data protection authority in Sweden has stated that it has no intention of blocking ChatGPT and has not been in touch with the Italian regulators.

According to Forbes, several municipalities in France have initiated independent investigations to evaluate the impacts and implications of using ChatGPT. Montpellier is considering banning ChatGPT for municipal staff as a precautionary measure.

The UK’s autonomous regulator for data, the Information Commissioner’s Office, stated that while they encourage advancements in AI, they are prepared to take action against violations of data protection laws.

Besides Italy, ChatGPT is also banned in China, North Korea, Cuba, Russia, and Iran.
