What’s so impressive about Meta’s Quest 2 hardware upgrade?
Meta Quest 2’s newest v47 update includes background audio playback, mixed reality captures, and, most importantly, compatibility with Quest Pro controllers. Quest 2 owners can pair the brand new Quest Pro controllers with their headset for a significantly improved VR experience.
Meta Quest Touch Pro controllers are a part of the new $1,500 Quest Pro headset, but the owners of Quest 2 can purchase the controllers separately for $300. The addition takes the two-year-old VR headset to the next level, as it changes some of the headset’s capabilities. Instead of the tracking ring, Pro controllers use camera-based SLAM tracking. There are three cameras on each controller, as well as a dedicated processor to track movements independently from the headset. The controllers provide a much wider range of motion for hyperrealistic gaming experiences.
The new feature, full mixed reality recording, means users can now record video and take screenshots with the AR passthrough feature. The update can improve users’ productivity as it enables them to record what they are working on and share the material with others.
Additional upgrades include the Quest mobile app’s user interface updates and new Media Sync features. The photos or videos a user takes on their VR headset will directly go to the app. The photos can also be captured using a controller shortcut. In addition, Quest 2 owners can now pin and unpin frequently used apps for quick access to their favorite games and experiences.
Meta has added the avatar mirror to the Home environment, so users can easily change their avatar’s appearance—from outfits to hairstyles and face shapes.
Background audio playback allows Quest owners to listen to music while playing games. The feature is on the Experimental Features panel in Settings. Finally, the shareable wishlist update enables users to make their wishlists public and send them to others.
