OpenAI’s viral artificial intelligence-powered chatbot ChatGPT gets unbanned in Italy.
On March 31, the country’s data protection agency, Garante, temporarily banned ChatGPT after its data breach, which took place on March 20. The chatbot was also blocked due to the alleged violation of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR). In addition, ChatGPT did not check the age of its users, while it was supposed to be available for individuals aged 13 and over.
On April 5, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman attended a videoconference meeting with commissioners from the Italian data protection agency. During the meeting, OpenAI stated it was ready to collaborate with the regulators and would follow the laws securing Italian and European citizens’ data.
The day after, OpenAI published a blog post about the company’s improved approach to safety. The article emphasizes that a critical focus of the company’s safety efforts is children’s protection. According to the post, ChatGPT can now be used by individuals over 18 or 13 or older with parental approval. The organization also shared that it does not use data to sell its services, advertise, or build profiles on individuals. More than that, OpenAI stated that ChatGPT rejects requests regarding the personal information of private individuals.
On April 28, Sam Altman shared a Tweet announcing that ChatGPT was “available in Italy again.” Altman did not share additional details. However, we can imagine that OpenAI has satisfied the European Union’s legal requirements regarding privacy and child protection.
OpenAI has recently introduced a feature that protects consumers’ privacy. The tool allows users to choose which conversations can be used to train OpenAI’s models. The organization will also soon release ChatGPT Business, which will provide a stronger data management option.
