Sony Music Entertainment files NFT and Metaverse-related trademarks
Sony Music Entertainment continues expanding into the Web3 space, filing NFT- and Metaverse-related trademarks for the Columbia Records logo. The news was shared by the United States Patent and Trademark Office attorney Mike Kondoudis.
The music giant has applied for trademarks that cover music, podcast production, and artist management under Sony Music. Additionally, the filing features marketing services, distribution, promotion, advertising, online entertainment, and audiovisual recordings.
The application covers downloadable audio and video recordings that include live musical performances. This type of content will reportedly be backed by non-fungible tokens. Sony also mentioned that artwork and text related to live performances will be authenticated by NFTs.
In the past months, several notable companies and celebrities have filed NFT and Metaverse trademark applications apart from Sony. On August 26, French luxury fashion brand Hermès filed a trademark application for its name. The company plans to expand into NFTs, virtual currencies, virtual good marketplaces, virtual clothing, fashion shows, and others.
Earlier the same month, singer and actress Miley Cyrus registered Metaverse and NFT-related trademarks for “MILEY” and “MILEY CYRUS.” The celebrity will produce virtual clothing, entertainment services, drinks and even plans to develop a virtual currency management software.
Among other companies that have “legally” entered into the Web3 space are digital auctioneer eBay, sporting tournament English Premier League, Mastercard, and Universal Music Group. As the sphere gradually gains users’ attention, more establishments will expand into the Metaverse in the nearest future.
