Google, Salesforce Back Anthropic's $450M Series C Round

San Francisco-based AI startup Anthropic has raised $450 million in a Series C round led by Spark Capital, with participation from Google, Salesforce Ventures, Sound Ventures, Zoom Ventures, and others.

According to Pitchbook, the latest funding values the startup at $4 billion, with a total of $1 billion raised. The fresh funding will be used to continue developing Anthropic’s proprietary AI assistant, Claude, and grow the company’s team across product and research.

This announcement comes after The Information reported in March that Spark Capital was leading a $300 million fundraise for Anthropic at a valuation of $4.1 billion.

“We are thrilled that these leading investors and technology companies are supporting Anthropic’s mission: AI research and products that put safety at the frontier. The systems we are building are being designed to provide reliable AI services that can positively impact businesses and consumers now and in the future,” Anthropic CEO, Dario Amodei, said in a statement.

Following the Series C round, Yasmin Razavi, a General Partner at Spark Capital focused on growth-stage software investments, has joined Anthropic’s Board of Directors. 

“Anthropic has assembled a world-class technical team that is dedicated to building safe and capable AI systems. The overwhelmingly positive response to Anthropic’s products and research hints at AI’s broader potential for unlocking a new paradigm of flourishing in our society. I am delighted to join their Board,” Razavi commented.

According to the announcement, the company will also use the funding to expand its product offerings, support businesses that will deploy Claude responsibly, and further AI safety research. Anthropic’s team is working on AI alignment techniques that allow AI systems to effectively navigate adversarial conversations, follow precise instructions, and be transparent about their behaviors and limitations. 

Founded by former OpenAI employees in early 2021, Anthropic aims to build reliable AI products and generate research about the opportunities and risks of AI. The company recently released an update for ChatGPT rival, Claude. The AI assistant can now process up to 100,000 text tokens, the equivalent of 75,000 words. This is three times more than ChatGPT’s 32,000 text tokens.

With the update, users can submit hundreds of pages of materials for Claude to digest and analyze. Beyond just reading the long texts, Claude can also retrieve information from the documents. Users can also drop multiple documents or even a book into the prompt and then ask Claude questions that require synthesis of knowledge across many parts of the text.
