Google Merges DeepMind and Google Brain to Accelerate AI Research

Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc., has merged Google Brain and DeepMind into a single unit named Google DeepMind. This consolidation of AI research divisions is a strategic move by the tech giant as it aims to keep up with other big companies like OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot.

According to a blog post by DeepMind’s co-founder and CEO Demis Hassabis, the newly formed unit will work closely with various Google product areas to deliver AI research and products. To develop more capable AI systems safely and responsibly, this move is expected to accelerate Google’s progress in AI.

“This group, called Google DeepMind, will bring together two leading research groups in the AI field: the Brain team from Google Research, and DeepMind. Their collective accomplishments in AI over the last decade span AlphaGo, Transformers, word2vec, WaveNet, AlphaFold, sequence to sequence models, distillation, deep reinforcement learning, and distributed systems and software frameworks like TensorFlow and JAX for expressing, training and deploying large scale ML models,”

Hassabis wrote.

In 2010, Demis Hassabis, along with Shane Legg and Mustafa Suleyman, co-founded DeepMind. The firm was acquired by Google for $500 million in 2014. DeepMind is most known for its pioneering work in AI, specifically for developing AI systems that can defeat professional human players in games like Go and chess. In addition, DeepMind has also made significant advancements in reinforcement learning and neural network architectures, leading to breakthroughs in protein folding prediction, drug discovery, and other fields.

Jeff Dean is now Google’s Chief Scientist, with his new role including oversight of both Google Research and Google DeepMind. Dean will work closely with Demis Hassabis to establish the future direction of AI research at Google and to lead the development of the company’s most critical and strategic AI-related projects. The first such project will involve the creation of a series of powerful multimodal AI models.

Meanwhile, Google Research will continue to drive progress in fundamental computer science research in areas such as algorithms, privacy and security, quantum computing, health, climate and sustainability, and responsible AI.

Google has recently announced Project Magi, an upcoming AI-powered search engine developed to replace its current search engine. Magi will answer questions in a chat-like interface, which means users can interact with it more naturally. Google plans to facilitate transactions through the search engine, allowing users to purchase products without leaving Google’s interface.
