What is VR entertainment?

Virtual reality (VR) entertainment lets users experience and interact with simulated environments for fun or enlightenment. These environments can be realistic or fantasy-like. They can be used for exercise, recreation in general, or gaming. VR headsets create an immersive experience, but other devices, including gloves or bodysuits, can be employed. VR entertainment includes video games, movies, and educational experiences.

One of the most widespread uses is gaming. Popular VR games include Beat Saber, a movement game utilizing popular music as a soundtrack, Arizona Sunshine, a zombie shooter, and Batman: Arkham VR. In these games, players can have immersive experiences that are much more lifelike than traditional console gameplay.

Another increasingly common use for VR technology is watching movies or TV. Films released for viewing with a VR headset like Meta’s Oculus Quest allow viewers to feel like they are part of the film’s story world. More simply, watching something on Netflix in VR can replicate a theater-like experience at home without purchasing a massive, wall-sized TV. Popular movies with versions for VR or shorter films associated with the main title include IT: Float and Save Every Breath: The Dunkirk VR Experience.

Understanding VR entertainment

VR entertainment can transport users into another world or dimension entirely created by computer graphics and programming, or it can be a simulation of something that already exists in the real world.

The potential for VR continues to evolve. This type of technology could one day even replace traditional television and movie-watching experiences. However, there are still years of development ahead for companies seeking to streamline and make virtual reality technology (goggles and other wearables) more portable and easy to use.
